How does the remote access service work?

The Remote Access Service uses a virtual private network (VPN) to allow you to connect securely to the campus network over the internet. The VPN will allow you to access things such as network resources, and internal University websites that you otherwise wouldn't be able to use when off-campus.

What is Bluebear Portal?

The BlueBEAR Portal provides web-based access to a range of BlueBEAR services , such as JupyterLab, RStudio, and some GUI applications. It also provides access for submitting BlueBEAR compute jobs. The BlueBEAR Portal is only available from on-campus or through using the University Remote Access Service.

Access to BlueBEAR is gained by logging on to one of the login nodes of the cluster. For the security of the service, access is limited to machines on the campus network. The University provides a Remote Access Service which allows you to be able to connect to BlueBEAR remotely.

What happens if you lose connection while working on a node?

Please be aware that if you lose connection whilst working interactively on a node then your session (and potentially work) will also be lost . To mitigate this issue we would recommend running in either a tmux or screen session, which will remain active after you disconnect from the node. This method will only work for non-graphical applications.

RESCUE GFE provides a security posture check and ensures VA data is encrypted from the end device into the VA trusted network. Prior to the device connecting and being allowed onto the VA trusted network the system is checked for multiple security baselines.

What is CAG 2FA?

CAG requires 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) by default for all users. The methods supported include PIV, CAC, and MobilePASS.

How to disable automatic server selection in VPN?

In the VPN tab of the setting screen, uncheck Enable automatic server selection. Close the settings.

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is designed for users with a Windows 10 (either VA-furnished or privately-owned) or personal Windows 11 computer. This is a good option for users who need access to a standardized VA desktop (PIV or eToken required).
