What is the mission of Boston University?

Institutional Mission: Boston University is a vibrant, residential research university, and intense collaboration and in-person interactions between students, staff, and faculty are crucial to our work. Remote work arrangements must support this mission.

How many students does Boston University have?

Boston University brings together almost 32,000 students, more than 3,700 faculty, and 6,100 staff into a community that fulfills our mission as a residential research university. The mission is intensely collaborative, carried out in our classrooms, laboratories, studios, and in countless formal and informal meetings in conference rooms, offices, and around dining tables across our campuses.

Does remote work impinge on student centered research?

What is Kaltura Capture?

Kaltura Capture allows you to easily record audio, video, and your computer screen, and integrates with My Media or Media Gallery in Blackboard. If you already use Echo360 in your class, Echo360 Universal Capture enables instructors to record audio, computer screens, and webcam video.

What is a VPN in BU?

BU’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates a “tunnel” between your computer and the campus network that identifies you as a member of the Boston University community when you are not connected directly to the campus network, allowing you access to restricted networked resources. Most BU and cloud resources don’t require connecting to the VPN. If you need to access resources that require connecting to VPN, please see our instructions for installing the VPN on your computer.

How to use zoom?

In preparation, you should make sure you have tested your access to the following equipment at home: 1 Laptop or desktop computer. 2 Microphone – this may be built into your laptop or computer, or you may use an external device such as a USB microphone or headset. If you’re looking to purchase a microphone, Zoom has the following recommendations. 3 Webcam – a camera may already be built into your laptop, but you can also use an external USB camera for video conferencing. If you’re looking to purchase a camera, Zoom has the following recommendations. 4 Internet – either commercially provided (e.g., Comcast, Fios), or configure your phone to be a wireless hotspot. Many providers are relaxing their policies and offering lower cost options to help people stay connected. If you are having trouble with your home connection, please see our troubleshooting tips.

What services require VPN?

Services that do require the use of VPN include: General Purpose network drive ( GPNAS ), Shared Computing clusters (SCC) logins to scc4.bu.edu, and to connect remotely to an on campus computer using RDP for Windows or ARD/VNC for Apple.

What is testing and surveys?

Tests and surveys functionality allows you to measure student knowledge, gauge progress, and gather information from students. See our information on how to deploy a test in Blackboard.

What is a course message?

Course messages are private and secure text-based communication that occurs within your course among course members. Although similar to email, you must be logged in to a course to read and send course messages. Message activity remains inside the system, and you don’t have to worry about email addresses that may be incorrect or outdated.

How to communicate with your class?

Communicate with your class through Blackboard. Announcements are an ideal way to post time-sensitive information critical to course success. Add announcements for due dates for assignments and projects, changes to your syllabus, corrections/clarifications of materials, and exam schedules.

How to access BU library?

You can easily access many BU Libraries resources online with just your BU username and password. The library collection includes millions of electronically available items, including e-books, journal and newspaper articles, videos, and audio recordings. You can locate and access these electronic materials by searching the library catalog. To find only items available electronically, choose the Available Online filter on the results page. Does BU have Adobe?

BU students have access to Adobe Creative Cloud tools. Access Adobe resources by filling out an Adobe Creative Cloud request. Two tools, in particular, have a quick learning curve and enable you to create graphics, web-based presentations, and videos.

Central Printing Via Myprint

You can use the MyPrint program to print remotely to printers at Mugar Library, or other locations on campus such as the residence halls. In most print center locations, printouts will be filed under your BU login name and kept for five days. VPNsoftware is required when you are using MyPrint from off campus.
