What is caedm?

CAEDM allows you to print from the labs, but also from an individual computer. CAEDM has several labs and hundreds of computers for your use. CAEDM provides many group collaboration resources.

How can I maximize my experience with caedm?

CAEDM may be new to you, but there are many ways that you can learn how to maximize your experience with CAEDM. CAEDM offers a wide variety of resources that can all be used no matter where you happen to be. From home, work, and even from your phone, your CAEDM needs can be fulfilled. CAEDM provides file access anywhere on campus and from home.

What is the Citrix Receiver for caedm?

The Citrix Receiver allows anyone with a CAEDM account to access many CAEDM applications from anywhere in the world, from a wide range of devices. If accessing Citrix from a Windows desktop/laptop, you can use any internet browser (IE/Edge works best, but Firefox and Chrome work also) to go directly to the CAEDM Citrix web interface.

How does caedm work with RGS?

CAEDM supports Windows and Linux clients connecting to both Windows and Linux RGS workstations. Each user logged into RGS uses one physical workstation blade in one of our server rooms. Each workstation has multiple processors and many gigabytes of memory, making high-end CAD and graphics work possible.

VPN Client - Brigham Young University

Almost all computers in the Physics and Astronomy department are using internal IP addresses. This means that unless someone is connected to the BYU internal network (on campus, ResNet, etc) then they will not be able to access most computers in the department from home or anywhere outside of BYU campus.

CAEDM

CAEDM offers a wide variety of resources that can all be used no matter where you happen to be. From home, work, and even from your phone, your CAEDM needs can be fulfilled.

J Drive – CAEDM Help Pages

User filespace is personal filespace on the J Drive. No other user will be able to access files saved to a personal filespace, or J Drive. All CAEDM users have a generous amount of disk space on the J Drive, limited by a personal quota.A group filespace will appear as a folder on a personal filespace, but it is a separate entity, with an independent quota.

Preface

This only applies to computers that you have a personal login for. You CANNNOT and SHOULD NOT attempt this with open lab CAEDM account computers (Like CB110 or the FB220-caedm computers).

Set Up Your Windows Lab Computer

Typically the same as the ME property tag label on the front of your computer) ( Instructions here

Set Up Your Home Computer

On Windows, hit the start/windows button, search for "remote desktop connection", andopen it.

Tips

Click the "Show Options" to configure other options like multiple monitors, and to save the connection settings into a desktop shortcut, so you can just click an icon to open the remote connection.

How CAEDM uses Citrix

Many applications available on the desktop computers in the labs are provided through Citrix. Upon selecting one of these applications, a connection is made to a Citrix terminal server, and the application is shown locally, but is running remotely. Seamless integration causes the application to look like it is running locally.

Installing Citrix Receiver

If accessing Citrix from a Windows desktop/laptop, you can use any internet browser (IE/Edge works best, but Firefox and Chrome work also) to go directly to the CAEDM Citrix web interface. After logging in with your CAEDM credentials, you will be prompted to accept the install of the Citrix client software.

Citrix Java Client

Use the Java client for tech podiums, internet cafes, or any computer where it is not possible to install the Citrix client, but Java is installed. The Java client is slower to react to user input and may not produce the best user experience compared to the Citrix receiver as explained above.

Using the Citrix Receiver

Once the Citrix Receiver is installed, access Citrix applications through the CAEDM Citrix website. The website will show a series of folders and icons available to launch. Clicking on program icons will cause that software to load in a separate window on your computer.

Printing from Citrix

Citrix will automatically detect existing printer drivers on the local computer. Citrix also permits printing to the CAEDM printers. Citrix also provides standard office programs that are omitted on the RGS blades. In order to print from a Citrix session simply print the file as you would normally.

Accessing files in Citrix applications

Citrix will connect to the J Drive, to USB on the local machine, and to the files on the local drive ( Windows only ). It will automatically capture USB devices when they are plugged in, and is configured to use the J Drive as its primary source.

Citrix vs RGS

CAEDM uses both Citrix and RGS, which may seem to be very similar. They are similar, but do have some differences:

What is VPN in Byu?

VPN. When you connect to the VPN (Virtual Private Network), your computer establishes an encrypted link to CAEDM and becomes part of the BYU campus network. You are able to access network resources as if your computer was plugged-in to the university network.

What is IKEv2 VPN?

IKEv2 (Internet Key Exchange version 2) IKEv2 is the preferred VPN connection as it is the simplest to use on most operating systems. IKEv2 support is included in Windows 7 or higher, MacOS 10.11 or higher, and is available by plug-in or client download for Linux, Android, iOS, and MacOS versions lower than 10.11.

Is VPN only available on campus?

However, there are some resources which, for security or licensing reasons, are only available to on-campus machines. When connected to the VPN, your computer is considered part of the on-campus network, thus making these restricted resources available to you remotely, and in a secure fashion.

How CAEDM uses ZCentral

The college is heavily invested in ZCentral technology, allowing anyone with a CAEDM account to use graphics-intensive applications from anywhere with a robust internet connection. Since a ZCentral workstation displays everything going on graphically, it can be network intensive. We recommend using a wired internet connection for best results.

Download ZConnect

ZConnect Client downloads are available on the CAEDM Downloads page. The ZConnect Client is available for Mac, Windows 10, and Red Hat or Debian based distributions of Linux.

Using ZConnect

Run the ZConnect shortcut from your Start menu. Login to the ZConnect client using your CAEDM credentials. From here you may choose to connect to a Windows or Linux machine, from both on or off campus. You will then automatically be directed to a free machine of the type chosen.

Printing in a ZConnect Session

Printing from within a ZConnect session from a ZCentral workstation is a great resource, but it is slightly limited. From any computer ZConnect has the capability to print to a CAEDM printer, but it cannot print to local printers.

Accessing files in a ZConnect Session

File access is a slightly limited from a ZConnect session. The user's personal J Drive will automatically be mapped and USB connections are automatically detected, but ZConnect will not automatically connect to files on the user's local machine.

Troubleshooting

During installation, if you receive an error stating "Failed to create process default activation context," you will need to install the .NET framework from Microsoft.

Advanced Options

On-screen collaboration is possible with multiple users. Click here for instructions.

How to use CAEDM resources?

This is done the first time a user logs into any CAEDM Windows machine and clicks "I Agree" on the resulting agreement. Once a user has agreed to the policy on any Windows machine, all CAEDM resources will be available to that user. Violation of policy may result your account being disabled .

What is CAEDM password?

A CAEDM password is unique to your CAEDM account. It is possible to choose a CAEDM password that is identical to your BYU NetID password, but we do not recommend that practice. For security reasons, it is recommended to choose a strong, separate password for your account.

How often are eligibility databases updated?

Issues with eligibility based on enrollment or major. Eligibility databases based on enrollment and major are automatically updated once a day. If classes or majors are added, eligibility requirements may not be satisfied until the next day.

Can I create an account with CAEDM?

College and department employees cannot create an account. Eligibility based solely on employment, either full or part-time is added manually by CAEDM employees. If your employee number has not been manually added to our database, you will not be able to add an account. Please contact us.

Can you be disabled for CAEDM?

Violation of CAEDM Policy . Accounts may also be disabled for violating CAEDM policy. Any user whose account is disabled for policy violation must personally see an administrator to be reactivated. Duration of de-activations vary with the offense, but start from when the user first comes and talks with an administrator.

Do I need a CAEDM account to use the labs?

To use the CAEDM labs, you need a CAEDM account. To be eligible for an account, one or more of the following must apply: You are currently enrolled in engineering classes, You are a declared engineering major, AND a currently enrolled student. You are employed by the college.

Does CAEDM work on Citrix?

It may work in department labs in the college, if your department is using CAEDM Active Directory or LDAP for authentication. Your CAEDM credentials will not work in any labs outside of CAEDM, including the Open Access Labs.

J Drive Access

  • The J Drive is a convenient place to store files. It provides a generous amount of space, and it's backed up every night. It is available without any setup from the labs, on RGS workstations, and inside Citrix applications. You can also map the J Drive, making it accessible on-campus just like the C drive, or use SCPto simply transfer files to and from the J Drive.
