How do I enable remote access on my Canvio home device?

When you turn on remote access, the system assigns you a PIN. The PIN is your CANVIO HOME’s Personal Identification Number and is unique to your CANVIO HOME device. The PIN is displayed on the main menu below the Enable Remote Access NOTE on/off switch.

The Toshiba Canvio Home Backup & Share ( at Amazon) (starting at $199.99 for 2TB) is less of a traditional network-attached storage (NAS) solution—and more of a feature-loaded networkable hard drive. How many folder shares are there in Canvio?

By default, there are two folder shares created at set up for each user: Public and Private. It's easy to add shares and to place files you upload into whatever folder on the device you want. Does Toshiba launcher detect Canvio?

The launcher detects Canvio on the network and installs the appropriate software. In the middle of my setup process on a Windows 7 system, a message appeared asking if I wanted to download the user manual. I'm not sure why that would display in the middle of an installation. A more appropriate point would be before (or after, for that matter). I certainly didn't want to interrupt the installation to grab a PDF. Anyway, you can dismiss this message and download the manual at a later time from Toshiba's website.

Does remote streaming work?

Remote streaming worked well in my tests, although your success will largely depend on the strength of your bandwidth. Performance. You have two options for downloading or uploading data to the Canvio. You can do so through the software or, at least on a desktop, map a drive to the Canvio and use a file manager.

Is Canvio faster than Seagate?

Through Explorer, Canvio was still a bit slower in write speed (time to copy data to the device) than two of its closest competitors, the Seagate Central and WD's My Cloud. However, read speed (time to access data from the device) is usually more of a concern with consumer network storage devices, as the most task-intensive uses are often streaming and sharing data.
