What do you need to access resources remotely?

To enable access to secure CSE resources, you must install and run the UB Virtual Private Network (UBVPN) client.

What command to use to copy files to CSE?

Windows: Use Filezilla or WinSCP. MacOS X: Use Cyberduck or Fetch. Linux: Use the secure copy ( scp) command to copy files to or from CSE servers (see man scp ). Depending on your Linux distribution, you may also have gftp installed on your system. Local Computer Filesystem Mounts.

Can X11 tunnel to CSE?

The X windows system can be used to tunnel graphics through an SSH connection back to a remote machine. While this method works well for smaller graphical applications, the encryption overhead often causes larger applications to perform sluggishly. To setup an X11 tunnel to a CSE system:

Overview

For protection, many of our CSE computers are not accessible from outside of the CSE network. However, it is sometimes helpful to have access. This document describes how to get remote access to CSE computers using SSH and SSH tunneling.

Method 1: Hop Through John

Use this method if you just need SSH access to a protected CSE computer.

Method 2: Tunnel Through John

Use this method if you need to access another network protocol (other than SSH) on a protected CSE computer.

Linux

The linux machines Arctic and Adriatic is intended for instructional use.The linux machines Pacific and Black is intended more for research work. It can also be used for instructional use.

Being nice

When using facilities remotely be aware that you are using a time-sharing system. Please be courteous and use the nice command (see man nice for information) to reduce the computing usage of any CPU or I/O intensive processes. Workstations should, generally, not be used for remote logins, particularly if someone is logged in on the console.
