What is Dell DRAC?

The Dell Remote Access Controllers (DRAC) and the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controllers (iDRAC) come in different versions, where a new (i)DRAC version is often linked to a new generation of Poweredge servers.

What is remote console?

The remote console features of the DRAC allow an administrator to interface with the computer as if sitting in front of it, and one can share the local inputs from keyboard and mouse as well as video output (DRAC does not support remote sound). Remote-console capability relies on either an Active X or Java plug-in, or HTML5 in the later models, which displays a window showing the video output on the local terminal and which takes mouse and keyboard input. This behavior closely resembles that of other remote access solutions such as VNC or RDP but also works if the operating system of the server doesn't work any more (unlike VNC or RDP). It is used to take the server console remotely.

What is idrac in server?

The hardware is often integrated on the motherboard of the server, and the combined product is termed iDRAC, where the "i" is for integrated. When iDRAC Express is used, the software and hardware systems management functions are shared with one of the server's on-board network interfaces using a unique IP address. What is Dell Remote Access Controller 6?

The PowerEdge R710 Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 6 (iDRAC6) incorporates an integrated video subsystem, connected to the 32-bit PCI interface of the ICH9. This logic is based on the Matrox® G200. The device only supports 2D graphics. The video device outputs are multiplexed between the front and rear video ports. If a monitor is connected to the front video connector, it will take precedence over the rear connection, thereby removing the display from the rear connection. The integrated video core shares its video memory with the iDRAC6’s 128 MB DDR2 application space memory. This memory is also used for the KVM buffer. What is EVRD on a 5500?

Voltage regulation to the Intel Xeon processor 5500 and 5600 series 2S is provided by EVRD (Enterprise Voltage Regulator-Down). EVRDs are embedded on the planar. Processor core voltage is not shared between processors. EVRDs support static phase shedding and power management through the PMBus.

Can a power switch be accidentally activated?

The control panel is designed so the power switch cannot be accidentally activated. The lock on the bezel secures the switch behind the bezel. In addition, there is a setting in the CMOS setup that disables the power button function.

Why are remote management controllers problematic?

Remote management controllers are generally problematic from a security perspective because they're fairly full-featured systems (the (i)DRAC series, like many others, is Linux-based ) that are dropped onto a card with full access to your server hardware and rarely, if ever, updated. Accessing them from a dedicated management network (as you're doing) is a necessary minimum level of security.

Can you run arbitrary commands with a username and password?

As far as I am aware, it is not possible to just connect and run arbitrary commands, you need a username and password - however, if given unlimited time and root access, I suppose a brute force may be possible, so, I was wondering how would I go about securing the DRAC?

Does DRAC require authentication?

One thing to be aware of is that local access to the DRAC requires administrative access to the OS running on the server but does not require authentication beyond that. If you're running Unix and run racadm or omconfig (or one of the IPMI tools) as root, you will have administrative access to the DRAC.

Can I leave idrac on the internet?

For the former , I' d suggest you not leave the iDRAC directly exposed to the internet. Use some ACLs in your router to prevent unauthorized IPs from accessing it. If you can, put it on a private IP block so this is less of an issue.

Can you disable local DRAC?

The main drawback to disabling local DRAC access with racadm config -g cfgRacTune -o cfgRacTuneLocalConfigDisable 1, is that you will no longer be able to change the DRAC's configuration locally, which will probably have the greatest potential impact if you need to reconfigure the DRAC's network settings at some point. Doing that will require care, because you could render yourself unable to configure it further remotely. As far as I can tell, you will still be able to modify DRAC settings through the server's BIOS even with local configuration disabled.

Does Dell recommend idrac?

Dell recommends the iDRAC port be on a physically dedicated LAN, and blows off many of the concerns one would rationally have about such a feature .

Can you log on to a DRAC if it's rooted?

Whilst logged on via SSH to the Drac, I notice that you can do some funky stuff, I simply want to make sure that if the box was ever rooted/hacked, it is not possible to log on to the DRAC (even if given unlimited time/brute force from host) and basically make sure it is completely 100% isolated.

Overview

The Dell Remote Access Controller, or DRAC, is an out-of-band management platform on certain Dell servers. The platform may be provided on a separate expansion card, or integrated into the main board; when integrated, the platform is referred to as iDRAC.
It mostly uses separate resources to the main server resources, and provides a browser-based or command-line interface (or both) for managing and monitoring the server hardware.

Features

The controller has its own processor, memory, network connection, and access to the system bus. Key features include power management, virtual media access and remote console capabilities, all available through a supported web browser or command-line interface. This gives system administrators the ability to configure a machine as if they were sitting at the local console (terminal).

Power management

With the DRAC enabled and using its own separate network connection, a user may login and reboot the system even if the core operating system has crashed. If the operating system has loaded the correct drivers, the DRAC will attempt to shut down the system gracefully. Without this feature and with the system running, administrators can use the remote console to access the operating system too.

Implementation
