What is Dell remote access controller (Drac)?

The Dell Remote Access Controller or DRAC is an out-of-band management platform on certain Dell servers.

Does Dell iDRAC support HTML5?

With the launch of the new Intel CPUs, today Dell released the newest update of their iDRAC (integrated Dell Remote Access Controller) software which includes support for HTML5 (in other words, no more JAVA!!) One of the biggest requests I’ve seen in the field is the request for HTML 5 support across management consoles.

What is an Integrated Lights-Out or integrated Dell remote access controller?

Two of the most popular of these are HP’s Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) or Dell’s Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC). Both the iLO and iDRAC have features that specifically address systems management as defined by the Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF) Common Information Model (CIM). These features include:

How do I connect to a Dell iDRAC?

Dell’s iDRAC supports multiple methods for connecting, including SSH, Telnet, HTTP, HTTPS, RMCP/RMCP+ and KVM over port 5900. HP has the edge when it comes to remote management applications.

When installing a DRAC III on a 64-bit system, after installing the managed system software, must you?

When installing a DRAC III on a 64-bit system, after installing the managed system software, you must install DRAC III drivers.

What is remote console?

The remote console features of the DRAC allow an administrator to interface with the computer as if sitting in front of it, and one can share the local inputs from keyboard and mouse as well as video output (DRAC does not support remote sound). Remote-console capability relies on either an Active X or Java plug-in, or HTML5 in the later models, which displays a window showing the video output on the local terminal and which takes mouse and keyboard input. This behavior closely resembles that of other remote access solutions such as VNC or RDP but also works if the operating system of the server doesn't work any more (unlike VNC or RDP). It is used to take the server console remotely.

What is Dell DRAC?

The Dell Remote Access Controllers (DRAC) and the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controllers (iDRAC) come in different versions, where a new (i)DRAC version is often linked to a new generation of Poweredge servers.

What is idrac in server?

The hardware is often integrated on the motherboard of the server, and the combined product is termed iDRAC, where the "i" is for integrated. When iDRAC Express is used, the software and hardware systems management functions are shared with one of the server's on-board network interfaces using a unique IP address. By contrast, iDRAC Enterprise version features a dedicated physical network interface.

What is the difference between a Dell vFlash SD card and a class 2 SDHC card?

While there are no other known functional differences between a Dell-branded vFlash SD card and a class 2 or greater SDHC card, the use of non-Dell media prevents the use of extended capacities and functions.

When was Idrac 7 released?

iDRAC version 7 was introduced in conjunction with the release of Dell PowerEdge generation 12 servers in March 2012, and is only available on 12th generation models. Unlike previous versions the functionality of iDRAC 7 is the same for rack, tower and blade-servers.

What is a controller?

The controller has its own processor, memory, network connection, and access to the system bus. Key features include power management, virtual media access and remote console capabilities, all available through a supported web browser or command-line interface. This gives system administrators the ability to configure a machine as if they were sitting at the local console ( terminal ).

Is DRAC5 a Linux platform?

The DRAC5 and iDRAC6 and higher are embedded platforms running Linux and Busybox. The firmware source code is available on the Dell website, but it is not possible to compile the source into a replacement firmware as Dell does not include a build environment.

Default Login Details

In case you don’t know the default login details for a Dell DRAC card are generally root and a password of calvin – modern versions of DRAC require you to change the default login details when setting it up.

Install Java

Make sure you have Java installed on your computer and enabled in your browser if you want to use the virtual console (you can get it from www.java.com/en/ ).

Login Failed, Possibly Due to Slow Network Connection

Despite the error message, this is often a problem not with connectivity or network speed but rather with security. I recommend downloading the SSL certificate you see in your browser and adding it to your Trusted Root Certification Authorities container on your PC, then restart your browser.

Firefox is the Answer

Having done all of the above and getting incrementally further along each time, in the end I still had to resort to using Firefox rather than my usual browser (Chrome).

How to reset idrac 13G?

13G iDRAC reset via iSM (integrated Service Module) – in the event the iDRAC were to hang, it can be reset within the server O/S by an IT admin.

Does Dell support HTML5?

One of the biggest requests I’ve seen in the field is the request for HTML 5 support across management consoles. Today, that becomes a reality for Dell server customers. With the release of iDRAC version 2.30.30.30, HTML 5 support on the remote console is available, at no charge. Additionally, you’ll find support on Dell’s 12th Generation of PowerEdge servers as well as the current 13G servers (see list below.) In case you aren’t familiar with HTML5, it is cleaner, easier to use, yada-yada-yada – but the real advantage is that it isn’t Active X or Java (a major thorn for many admins.) If you like ActiveX or Java, don’t worry – it’s still available; HTML5 is just a 3rd option to use. Some additional features you’ll see on the HTML5 remote console is keyboard control, keyboard macros, screen capture and mouse acceleration features.

What is the IP address of idrac6?

The iDRAC6 network interface is enabled with a static IP address of 192.168.0.120 by default. It must be configured before the iDRAC6 is accessible. After the iDRAC6 is configured on the network, it can be accessed at its assigned IP address with the iDRAC6 Web interface, Telnet, or Secure Shell (SSH), and supported network management protocols, such as Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI).

What is an idrac6?

The iDRAC6 uses an integrated System-on-Chip microprocessor for the remote monitor/control system . The iDRAC6 co-exists on the system board with the managed PowerEdge server. The server operating system is concerned with executing applications whereas the iDRAC6 is concerned with monitoring and managing the server's environment and state outside the operating system.

Where is the idrac password?

The iDRAC password is configured by default with the service tag number on the pullout at the front of the ExtraHop appliance. You should change the default password to a more secure password that you choose.

Does the EDA 1100 have an idrac?

The iDRAC interface is enabled by default on all ExtraHop appliances, except the EDA 1100 and EDA 1200, which do not have an iDRAC interface. You can download updates for the iDRAC controller firmware from the Dell Technologies website.

Does Dell have iLO?

They have standalone HP iLO applications for Android, iOS and Windows. Dell currently offers an Active-X and a Java-based application that can only be launched from a Web browser. You’ll need to change the default Internet Explorer settings to allow the Active-X tool to work.

Is OpenManage Essentials free?

The Java-based tool requires a Java runtime that must be downloaded separately. Dell’s OpenManage Essentials is a free download aimed at larger installations without any other high-end management console. The latest version is version 2.5 and includes a number of new features typically found in higher-end tools.

Is HP the same as Dell?

Both Dell and HP have separate but similar management tools for their blade system offerings. Dell’s Chassis Management Controller (CMC) integrates the management of individual components of the chassis with the iDRAC instances on each blade and provides quick links to accomplish common management tasks from the main page. HP’s Onboard Administrator provides a similar function to Dell’s CMC but isn’t quite as integrated.

Overview

The Dell Remote Access Controller, or DRAC, is an out-of-band management platform on certain Dell servers. The platform may be provided on a separate expansion card, or integrated into the main board; when integrated, the platform is referred to as iDRAC.
It mostly uses separate resources to the main server resources, and provides a browser-based or command-line interface (or both) for managing and monitoring the server hardware.

Features

The controller has its own processor, memory, network connection, and access to the system bus. Key features include power management, virtual media access and remote console capabilities, all available through a supported web browser or command-line interface. This gives system administrators the ability to configure a machine as if they were sitting at the local console (terminal).

Versions

The Dell Remote Access Controllers (DRAC) and the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controllers (iDRAC) come in different versions, where a new (i)DRAC version is often linked to a new generation of Poweredge servers.
The hardware is often integrated on the motherboard of the server, and the combined product is termed iDRAC, where the "i" is for integrated. When iDRAC Express is used, the software and har…

Power management

With the DRAC enabled and using its own separate network connection, a user may login and reboot the system even if the core operating system has crashed. If the operating system has loaded the correct drivers, the DRAC will attempt to shut down the system gracefully. Without this feature and with the system running, administrators can use the remote console to access the operating system too.

Remote console

The remote console features of the DRAC allow an administrator to interface with the computer as if sitting in front of it, and one can share the local inputs from keyboard and mouse as well as video output (DRAC does not support remote sound). Remote-console capability relies on either an Active X or Java plug-in, or HTML5 in the later models, which displays a window showing the video output on the local terminal and which takes mouse and keyboard input. This behavior clo…

Virtual media

The DRAC enables a user to mount remotely shared disk-images as if they were connected to the system. In combination with the remote console, this gives administrators the ability to completely re-install an operating system, a task which traditionally required local console access to the physical machine. Administrators can control virtual media through the browser or through the OpenManage tools provided by Dell, though specific versions of browsers restrict some funct…

Access

The main DRAC management takes place via a web interface. All generations of the DRAC use the default user name root and the default password calvin. Starting with the DRAC 3, Microsoft Active Directory can also provide authentication either with Dell AD Schema Extensions or Standard Schema.

Implementation

The DRAC5 and iDRAC6 and higher are embedded platforms running Linux and Busybox. The firmware source code is available on the Dell website, but it is not possible to compile the source into a replacement firmware as Dell does not include a build environment.
The DRAC provides remote access to the system console (keyboard and screen) allowing the system BIOS to be accessed over the Internet when the server is rebooted. This is done by confi…
