What is remote console?
The remote console features of the DRAC allow an administrator to interface with the computer as if sitting in front of it, and one can share the local inputs from keyboard and mouse as well as video output (DRAC does not support remote sound). Remote-console capability relies on either an Active X or Java plug-in, or HTML5 in the later models, which displays a window showing the video output on the local terminal and which takes mouse and keyboard input. This behavior closely resembles that of other remote access solutions such as VNC or RDP but also works if the operating system of the server doesn't work any more (unlike VNC or RDP). It is used to take the server console remotely.

I recently got a good eBay deal on a DRAC 5 remote access card for my Dell PowerEdge 2900 server.

I happened to be working with another DRAC 5 this week and needed to upgrade its firmware to version 1.51 so it would work with Internet Explorer 8 (on Windows 7).
After the Recovery
After the firmware was installed, I rebooted the machine (no more “initialization failure” message!), pressed Ctrl-E when prompted, and set up an IP address on my network (it had reverted to the default again). After that, I was able to log in to the DRAC via a web browser as usual, using the user root and the default password calvin.

When the appliance is running, the LCD displays the existing IP address. Under the LCD, press the checkmark button between the two arrows.
Set a secure password
The iDRAC password is configured by default with the service tag number on the pullout at the front of the ExtraHop appliance. You should change the default password to a more secure password that you choose.
