December 14, 2009 - Campus retires Usenet news service

Information and Educational Technology retired the campus Usenet news service on Monday, December 14, 2009. Its popularity and usefulness have plunged with the rise of Web-based discussion groups, mailing lists, blogs, and pervasive email access. In recent years, the campus Usenet news server has hosted only a few class discussion groups.

Background

Usenet News ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet) started in 1980, ten years before the World Wide Web. The Usenet News service at UC Davis dates at least to the early 1990s. At one time, many science and engineering classes used it as a bulletin board for discussions.

Action

If you work with faculty or staff who still moderate a Usenet news service, please help them transition to either a classroom mailing list or to a SmartSite mailing list, as appropriate.

How many seats are there in Academic Surge 1044?

With additional licensing and hardware, we are now able to offer 30 seats on a 24-hour basis, in addition to the seats reserved for class times in the labs. As before, all lab seats will be available remotely when the labs are not in session (after 8PM weekday evenings and weekends), but you will be able to use the labs anytime through this new program.

Can I use Duo Security on my phone?

Install and register for Duo Security first. The Duo app will turn your mobile phone ( highly recommended ), iPad, tablet or landline into a multi-factor authenticator.

Can you access your university resources?

You can access university resources, including your regular work desktop, shared internal files, and folders by using the full downloadable VMware Horizon Client or the Horizon web client through your preferred browser.

Can I use Duo on OIT?

Registration and installation of Duo will need to be completed prior to using either option.

Does VMware Horizon require multifactor authentication?

Please note that you will be prompted for multi-factor authentication through Duo during login to the VMWare Horizon environment. Registration and installation of Duo will need to be completed prior to usage. Guide for using Duo with VMware Horizon.

What is a VPN?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) enables you to securely access remote network services that would normally be blocked by firewalls or other network security measures. (See Wikipedia for additional information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network)

Why would I need to use the LS VPN?

Many departmental and LS network services, including network printers, file servers, and most office computers, are protected by firewalls. If you want to be able to access these resources from home, while traveling, or even from the campus Moobilenet wireless network, you will need to use the VPN.

Who is eligible to use the VPN?

Any LS employee (faculty and staff), LS IT customers, and LS graduate students are eligible to use the LS VPN. VPN access is granted automatically in most cases.

What is OneDrive for CU Denver?

Using Microsoft OneDrive: Microsoft OneDrive is a cloud storage tool which provides 1TB of storage space and is available to all CU Denver students, faculty, and staff for free. Some basic tutorials for using this tool are included below. ( under development)

What is CEDC IT?

CEDC IT provides services and support for all technology needs within the college. Students interface with us through 10 computer labs (now accessible remotely), more than 100 engineering software applications, our consultation and support services, and more. Where central technology offices seek to support the CU Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus locations as a whole, we focus narrowly on the College of Engineering, Design and Computing and create custom solutions to meet our students' needs.

What is CU Denver VPN?

VPN: CU Denver VPN is available to assist students, faculty, and staff with accessing certain on-campus resources. The VPN connects you to the campus network as if you were physically on campus and connecting via WiFi or ethernet. This can be used to remotely access systems such as CEDC computer labs, CSEGrid, and more. Instructions, tutorials, and downloads can all be found at this link.

Is CEDC online or remote?

Online and remote learning is becoming a cornerstone of CEDC course offerings and will continue to expand as CU Denver adapts to the ongoing pandemic. The resources found on this page are intended to support CEDC students in preparing for and working through the tools and systems needed to work in this distance-learning environment. The content here will continue to expand and grow as more tools, resources, and tutorials are made available.
