How do I connect to FASTX from off campus?

How long does it take to launch XFCE?
From the bookmarks menu choose MATE (or XFCE) as a desktop environment and click "Launch:" If this is the first time you have ever logged into the CLAS Linux FastX remote desktop server, this step will take a few seconds (3-10 seconds) while your home directory is created in the background.

The [tab] after entering FastX finds files that match "FastX", so if you have more than one file with FastX, you will need to select the correct file. Then run the command FastX/bin/FastX. FastX will open to the activation screen. Add the license information as described below.
Where to install FastX2?
To proceed you have to accept the End-User License Agreement. By default FastX wants to install in the Program Files directory on the C: drive. You can change the installation directory or accept the default. The installer tells you that it is ready to install FastX2; you need to click the Install button. When the installation is complete, click the Finish button to exit the setup wizard.
How to start a session in FastX?
To start a session, click on the + in the upper right corner of the FastX screen and choose SSH. You will enter the session Name (your choice), the Host, the port, and User. The Host should be a specific Linux workstation, such as l-lnx131.engr.uiowa.edu. Use the specific named host if you need some particular resource, Port is 22. User is your Hawkid; in the illustration the user account is bgreene. Click Save if you want to use the same connection in the future.

FastX is now available again in the EWS environment, but students will need to update to the 2.0.60 (or later) version of the software. The version currently on the WebStore is incompatible with EWS' new FastX environment. Server upgrades require client upgrades, I guess.

Overview
EWS users should use SSH and/or SFTP clients to connect to linux.ews.illinois.edu. For connections from Windows machines, Engineering IT recommends using mobaxterm as your SSH/SFTP client.
SSH from Off-Campus
On May 30th, 2017, the campus Office for Privacy and Information Security (OPIS) implemented a campus firewall change to block off-campus SSH connections to on-campus resources. A VPN connection is now required. Machines that require an exception to this for teaching or research purposes can request one here.
