What is a conction remote desktop?

It allows users to remotely access a Windows computer through the proprietary Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). Remote Desktop is supported for accessing Windows virtual machines (VMs) in the Big Data Lab and Cybersecurity datacenter. It is also used to access the War Room Remote Desktop. Faculty can use Remote Desktop to access their office computers from home. In most cases, you must first connect to the designated VPN.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is used to establish a secure connection over the Internet to access restricted University resources from off campus. Faculty, staff, and students with a current, active relationship with the University can use the VPN to access applications that would otherwise only be available on campus.

Getting Started

An OpenVPN client needs to be installed on your computer to connect to the Computer Science VPN. The OpenVPN client for Windows can be downloaded from the OpenVPN download page. On Mac OS X, you may use Tunnelblick. On most Linux distributions, OpenVPN can be installed through the distribution's package management system.

Troubleshooting tips

You can follow these basic steps to resolve most problems you may encounter using the VPN. Please try these steps before contacting us for help.

Launch a web browser. On computers in Adams 204 or 019, launch Google Chrome (under Applications->Internet, or type “google-chrome” in terminal)

Once you have entered your credentials, click “Continue”. 5 If you see a “certificate couldn’t be verified” message, click continue. 6 You should now have established a remote desktop. When you want to close the connection click “Window” -> “Close” or press command + W.
