What is Smart Homer?
Smart Homer is a Web-enabled puppet that turns on your TV when Simpsons is on. As Homer is too lazy to browse the Web himself, a script in the cloud checks the online TV program for him. If Simpsons is on, the script triggers the Arduino Web service in Homer's belly to activate his infrared eyes. No brain involved.
What is the Arduino in Homer's belly?
The Arduino in Homer's belly acts as a Web server. This allows us to send push notifications (or rather: trigger a Webhook) with a simple HTTP PUT request. To enable remote access without the hassle of port forwarding, we use Yaler.net, a relay service (disclosure: I'm a founder).
Two-Factor Authentication Now Required For Remote Access
All employees who remotely access WakeMed email or the WakeMed network using Citrix or VPN are required to enroll in Duo Security.
Remote Access - Preparation & Options
We encourage all employees to prepare for the possibility of having to work from home before you actually need to do so. If you don’t typically work from home, testing equipment and solutions early will give everyone more time to resolve issues.
Office 365 Remote Access: Preferred Method
Many features of Office 365 are available from any Internet-connected device. If most of your data has been migrated to SharePoint Online and OneDrive, this might be all you need to get most of your work done. This include access to e-mails, and web-based versions of Word and Excel.
Remote Desktop to Your Own PC: Second Best Method
This the best option for people who have their own dedicated PC at WakeMed. This will give you the same desktop you are used to every day, with all the applications, and at similar speeds.
Always On VPN: Least Preferred
Always On VPN automatically connects WakeMed laptops to our network, giving you full access to all our applications as if at a physical WakeMed location.

Please note, you must have administrative access privileges on your PC to install and setup the Juniper Network Client. You will need to contact local IT support personnel for assistance with this step if you do not have administrative privileges. Administrative access is ONLY necessary during the setup and initial login to the CMSNet Secure Access Service.

The CMSNet Secure Access Service Juniper Client will discontinue access to public networks (e.g. the Internet) as well as local networks and resources such as printers, file servers, database and mail servers (e.g. Outlook) while logged in and securely connected. Remote connectivity, typically used by local IT support personnel, will also be unavailable while securely connected to the Juniper Client.
