What is a rras server?

With Routing and Remote Access (RRAS), a computer running Windows Server 2008 can function as a network router, which routes IP packets between networks. This router service allows LANs and WANs to be interconnected easily. The routing technology is built into the operating system, providing small and large businesses with a cost-effective and secure way of interconnecting their networks.

How to add another server to a server?

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the Routing and Remote Access service (RRAS) does not start when there is no network connectivity.

Cause

When RRAS starts, it tries to initialize certain functions in Internet Authentication Service (IAS) for authentication. The IAS initialization fails when there is no network connectivity. Therefore, RRAS does not start. On Windows 7 and on Windows Server 2008 R2, IAS initialization failure is by design when there is no network connectivity.

Workaround

To start RRAS in order to create a new incoming connection, your computer needs to be connected to a network.

Default Behavior

Routing and Remote Access is a Win32 service. In Windows 7 it is disabled and therefore it isn't starting. When the Routing and Remote Access service is started, it is running as localSystem in a shared process of svchost.exe. Other system components, such as drivers and services, may run in the same process.

Dependencies

Routing and Remote Access is unable to start, if at least one of the following services is stopped or disabled:

Restore Default Startup Configuration for Routing and Remote Access

Before you begin doing this, make sure that all the services on which Routing and Remote Access depends are configured by default and function properly. See the list of dependencies above.

Default Behavior

The Routing and Remote Access service runs as localSystem in a shared process. It shares an executable file with other services. If the Routing and Remote Access fails to load or initialize, the error is recorded into the Event Log.

Dependencies

Routing and Remote Access will not start, if the following services are stopped or disabled:

Automated Restore

1. Select your Windows 7 edition and Service Pack, and then click on the Download button below.

How to check remote access status?

To check the status of RemoteAccess, check the state of the RemoteAccess service (Routing and Remote Access) under the Services tab in Windows Task Manager.

How to start rras?

To start RRAS to create a new incoming connection, your computer needs to be connected to a network. After RRAS starts, you can still create a new incoming connection after you disconnect from the network.

Why won't rras start?

Additionally, you can't create new incoming connections when there's no network connectivity. This is because incoming connections require that RRAS is started .

Static Routes

One way to build a routing table is to have an administrator enter each route manually, using either the RRAS snap-in or the netsh utility. The problem is that the amount of administration is quite often prohibitive, especially on larger networks.

Summarization Routes

The concept of static routes is simple—an administrator programs each and every destination route into the routing table of the RRAS server. When a packet comes in to the server from one interface, the server checks its routing table to determine where the packet should be forwarded to.

Continued

There is a possible price to be paid, however. In our example, any destination network that has the 192.168 root would be considered "reachable" by the server.
