How to setup remote access?

Once installed, you can now connect to remote endpoints by following the steps below:

  • The software needs to be downloaded on both the local and remote computers.
  • Open the software on both the local and remote computers.
  • Write down the ITarian ID number and password of the remote computer.
  • Click “Start Connection.”
  • Enter the ID number and password of the remote computer.
  • Click “Connect.”

What does remote access mean?

Remote access or remote connection is a term used to describe a device capable of accessing a shared resource. For example, a user may have the capability of remotely accessing his or her company network with their home computer to read e-mail. You should only give remote access to people you know or that you are sure you can trust.

How to properly secure remote access?

  • Windows or Mac login when connecting remotely
  • Request permission to connect to the user’s computer
  • Automatically blank the remote screen when connected
  • Automatically lock remote computer when disconnected
  • Lock the remote computer’s keyboard and mouse while in session
  • Lock the streamer settings using Splashtop admin credentials

Remote Access. Remote Access is simply reaching a remote machine, most often a computer, to carry out a particular task. In most cases, Remote Access is used to troubleshoot a target computer that is situated geographically at a different place.

CPS Windows Computer

Non-CPS Mac Computer

Select these instructions if you are using a non-CPS/personal Mac computer.

Windows Devices

Mobile and remote technology, or DirectAccess, allows off-campus network access for Windows devices without connecting using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Mac Devices

Connect to the UMICH VPN to access your home directory and department drives from off-campus. The UMICH VPN is installed on Macs. If you are using the VPN for the first time, you may need to add it to your menu bar.
