How does jellyfish remote access work?

Jellyfish Remote Access is a service that allows you to connect your Jellyfish to the internet, and then access it remotely through the Connect App as if you were in your office. All of your shares and file paths will remain the same, the only difference will be the speed and latency since you’re connected over the internet instead of a direct 10GbE connection like you’re used to. We’ve seen great results with nearly perfect playback for some users, while others will need to download files locally or work with proxy media. It all depends on your internet speeds.

What is the technology behind Jellyfish Remote Access?

The technology is a network virtualization platform very similar to VPN. It is a peer-to-peer secure and encrypted connection. LumaForge will create and manage a virtual network for you and provide you with your unique Network ID. We will join your Jellyfish to this network and also provide you with an IP address you will be using to access your Jellyfish remotely.

What kind of work can be done remotely?

There is a ton of work that you can do from home. In most cases, if you prepare correctly, you can even edit directly from your remote Jellyfish. We highly recommend using proxy mode for your projects, that way you can either edit directly from the Jellyfish while being remote or quickly download the proxy files.

Does jellyfish have a public IP address?

Access to virtual networks is controlled by certificates. In addition, the Jellyfish doesn’t have a public IP. So it will be like any other computer in their office that is connected to the internet. Whatever policies your IT team has for that, also apply to the Jellyfish.

How do bandwidth and latency impact my workflows with Jellyfish Remote Access?

If you want to use Remote Access to manage your Jellyfish remotely with Jellyfish Manager, to organize files and folders on your Jellyfish shares remotely via Finder, or to browse, preview and transcode media on your Jellyfish remotely with Jellyfish Media Engine , a regular internet connection will do no matter from where in the world you connect to your Jellyfish.

How far can you work on jellyfish?

Generally, you should be able to work comfortably within a range of 500 miles between the Jellyfish and your home setup. Over long distances, you may need to use lower bitrate media such as proxies but you will still be able to edit straight off the server.

What type of cable is used for jellyfish?

Cat 6 and higher is full-on certified to handle gigabit speeds. Having a Gigabit Ethernet connection both on the Jellyfish side and on the workstation side is of course ideal.

Do jellyfish have direct connections?

Even if you have a fast WiFi network, you will always get better performance with direct connections. Make sure that the cables that go from your Jellyfish or your home workstation into your modem or router are in good shape and that they support the speed of your internet connection.

Can jellyfish be used remotely?

Many of our clients have successfully used Jellyfish Remote Access to manage media and projects on their Jellyfish remotely during COVID lockdowns. In the past year, quite a few productions, including feature films and tv-series have also been completely edited off-site and collaboratively using this new service.

Can you edit on jellyfish?

As latency increases, it will become more and more challenging to work straight off the Jellyfish. But that does not mean you won’t be able to edit remotely. There are quite a few ways to make this work, even without downloading media from the Jellyfish to edit locally.

Try accessing your Jellyfin server by entering either http://jellyfin.ethanmad.com:8096 or http://ethanmad-desktop:8096, using your domain or hostname instead of mine. If you can connect, you’re set! In the next step, we’ll add TLS and remove the need for the port number.
