Update: So as it turns out, there are issues doing with this with nVidia graphics cards. What was happening is that the screen was going blank, and not accepting any user input. Now that I and the family are home, I can test this while the computer is in use. I can see the screen now, but it's not accepting user input, and it's still the size of a postage stamp - actually, two - one that displays the desktop background, and another that displays what's currently on the screen..

I suspect that X11vnc isn't running for the user that you're trying to log into.

Thanks Ralplpcr! I found that I have to log in to SSH as the user in front of the screen (no problemo), specify a geometry when I launch the server, and finally, not allow the client to auto-scale. Next I'm going to figure out how to get it to launch at boot using that "magic cookie" thing, but until then, this is a success! I don't use teamviewer for connecting to my home computer because it relies on a service or company existing.
