Why can't I install MediaPortal 2 on Windows?

Hint for a "headless server" installation... If you try to install the MediaPortal 2 server on a system accessed by RDP (Remote Desktop) or similar (TeamViewer, VNC,...), it is possible that the automated DX9 installation fails. This is due to the not enough powerful RDP graphics. Windows fails to install DX9 from web- installer in such cases.

It is stored directly in the Data Directory. Line 7 is somewhat different as it tells MediaPortal 2 Server where to look for its plugins. So this does not affect "data", but program files. "<APPLICATION_ROOT>" is nothing more than the Installation Directory you chose during install for your MediaPortal 2 Server.

Why does MediaPortal 2 fail?

This is due to the not enough powerful RDP graphics. Windows fails to install DX9 from web- installer in such cases. Then you have to install the full DX9 package (aprox 95 MB, not the 1 MB file, link is above to find) before you can install MediaPortal 2.

The server is the responsible for the central management of all media. You can connect multiple clients to the server and across all those clients you get the same data. Besides the media files itself, this also includes the meta data like genre, summary, actors, as well as the play count, watched state and last time a media has been played etc.

The MP2-Server.exe is a windows service, that means it is started automatically with windows. A windows service is already running even if no user is logged in to the system, yet. Windows is able to detect stops or crashes of the service and automatically restart it.
