When was Mercy Health System founded?

Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 190 years. It began at an unlikely time in an unlikely place with an unlikely woman. In 1827, our founder, Catherine McAuley fulfilled her dreams and opened the first House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland to help alleviate the health care, education and employment needs of poor women and children. In 1871, the Sisters of Mercy traveled to St. Louis and from there throughout the Midwest, beginning what would, today be known as Mercy. We’ve been caring for our communities ever since.
