WD 2go web access provides free remote access to your My Book Live from most computers with an internet connection – from anywhere in the world. After logging in, WD 2go mounts your My Book Live on your computer like a local drive to make your remote folders available on your PC or Mac® computer.

Can I connect WD My Book Live directly to computer?

It is possible to connect the MyBookLive to the computer directly and use it from the computer but you would not be able to see the unit from other computers on the networks because you would have to share the drive in a way that it is visible on other devices even when the unit its connected directly to your computer.

How do I turn off My Book Live remote access?

Disable Remote Access To do this Navigate to Settings-->System-->Remote Access and Ucheck the Remote Access as in the diagram below. This will disable the ability to connect to your NAS through WD's protocol's and APP's.

How does My Book Live work?

It plugs into computers, typically through USB. The affected model, known as My Book Live, uses an Ethernet cable to connect to a local network. From there, users can remotely access their files and make configuration changes through Western Digital cloud infrastructure.

What is the default password for WD MyBookLive?

admin/adminYes, by default the My book will only have the Admin user, the username and password is admin/admin, you can change the password from the dashboard but if you forget it you can always press the reset button on your My Book to put it back to the default password without deleting any of your files.

Is WD MyBookLive still supported?

Insert your paperclip into the hole and depress the "Reset" button. Hold the button down for 10 seconds and release. After 40 seconds the drive will reboot. This is a "long" reset and your drive will be completely reset to factory settings.

How do I access my book live on my Mac?

Easier way to get to it on a Mac is to open Safari. On the top menu bar on the left, there is the bookmark icon, click on that. Now click on Bonjour and it will open a window on the left. Look for the device name e.g. MyBookLive and double click on that.

It seems that part of this exploit was made public by a pair of security researchers who planned to use it in the Pwn2Own hacking competition in Tokyo in 2020.

How to fix, recover data from, or upgrade your WD My Book Live

Given that many devices running the My Cloud OS 3 software, which were vulnerable, could not upgrade to My Cloud OS 5, the security researchers released a patch to fix the vulnerabilities they had discovered.

Lessons learned

Note that even though the affected devices are fairly old, they may still be sold online or in retail. You should definitely not buy any device of this type, either new or used, unless you’re sure it can run the newer firmware.
