Where to send a request to VCL?
Any faculty or staff in need of remote access to VCL applications will need to make a request to vcl_help@ncsu.edu.
Does NC State have dialup?
Computing Services supports a free dialup service to the NC State network, but because the demand for this service has increased beyond the capacities of the university's resources, phone lines are often busy and callers may have to wait a long time to gain phone access to the system. To use the NC State Dialup Service, first make sure your computer has a modem, then create a dialup connection to 515-6320. When your computer connects with the campus dialup servers, you will be prompted to login to the system with your Unity/Eos userid and password.
Is course based access still available?
Course based access will continue to be available. Additional software can be made available for specific course usage. However, due to vendor licensing, Engineering faculty and staff are restricted from general access all possible applications (department specific applications for example).
Is ftp.ncsu.edu an anonymous service?
The anonymous FTP service at ftp.ncsu.edu for uploads to the incoming directory and anonymous use such as the various mirrors we host will not be affected.
What is the role of an EOS operator?
The primary responsibilities of the EOS Operator are to assist students with the usage of NCSU Realm Solaris, and EOS "Zen" Windows 2000 workstations in a clustered lab environment, diagnose and report system problems, and perform basic network and workstation troubleshooting on both hardware and software levels. All EOS Operators are also expected to enforce user policies, report violations to the proper persons, and help maintain a professional lab atmosphere conducive to learning.
Can you use EOS labs in the library?
Unlike EOS labs, Unity labs in the library and around campus can be used by all students at the University, regardless of the department or College. ITECS is responsible for the labs and operators in Daniels Hall and Engineering Building II, and all workstations in the EOS labs. WolfCopy is responsible for maintenance and support of lab printers.
Windows Access
To access AFS from Windows 8 or 10, you must first download an application called PuTTy. PuTTy is available via the E 115 “Links and Downloads” page:
Mac Access
To access AFS from a Mac you must first start up your terminal application. Terminal is found by going to the Finder window and choosing Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal (or Spotlight, search for Terminal).
Linux Access
To access AFS from Linux you must perform some configuration. Start by having an xterm window open.
What is NCSU remote access?
NCSU provides a remote access service that allows you to reserve a computer with a desired set of applications for yourself, and remotely access it over the Internet. This service is powered by the Apache Software Foundation’s Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) software.
When did NCSU donate VCL?
In November 2008, NCSU donated the VCL source code to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) as part of on-going efforts to expand the VCL community and to foster open source development. NCSU continues to be heavily involved in the development of VCL through the open source community at ASF.

What authentication services does NC State use?
To protect its most vital campus resources, NC State uses two multi-factor authentication services: Duo Security and Google 2-Step.
Can you store sensitive data on an endpoint?
You must not store sensitive (red) data on your personal endpoint, but you may access red data provided you have the proper security controls in place as indicated in the Endpoint Protection Standard. See Section 6, Table 2 and Table 3.
Does NC State have OIT?
OIT offers a number of services that can help eligible NC State faculty and staff work productively from home or remote ly. You will need to log in with your Unity credentials.
