The need for specialized material, equipment, or materials secured at PSU, must either be minimal or flexible.

What is PSU copyright?

L. Intellectual Property & Records. Intellectual property developed by PSU employees working remotely is subject to PSU's Copyright Ownership Policy. Products, documents, and records that are used, developed, or revised while working remotely shall be copied or saved in a PSU system, file or network drive.

What does a supervisor consider when evaluating an employee's work remotely?

The supervisor shall consider an employee request to work remotely in relation to the operational and customer needs of the department. The supervisor will take into consideration the overall impact of the employee’s total time out of the primary worksite, including flextime, compressed workweek schedules, meetings, consultations, presentations, and conferences. The supervisor will also consider the applicant's demonstrated conscientiousness about work time and productivity, and their ability to be self-motivated and have minimal face-to-face daily supervision.

Why is PSU a good place to work?

It can maximize productive work time, decrease the need for parking and office facilities, and decrease traffic congestion and air pollution while providing flexibility for employees. The remote work location may be the employee's home or another suitable location.

Can a remote worker work at a university?

University Closure. If the primary worksite is closed due to an emergency or inclement weather, a remote worker may continue to work at the remote worksite, if possible. If there is an emergency at the remote worksite, such as a power outage, the remote worker will notify the supervisor as soon as possible. The remote worker may be reassigned to the primary worksite or an alternate worksite. See University Closure Policy for more details.

Do you need a telecommuting agreement?

In such cases, the formal telecommuting agreement is not required, but should be documented for department files by memorandum or email, specifying work expectations and duration.

How to use RDP on lab machines?

There are two ways to use RDP with the lab machines: Connect via Native RDP Client and Connect via Web. Using a native RDP client will give better performance, but it will also require you to be on the VPN. The Web browser option does not require the VPN and is much simpler to use, but there is a moderate decrease in performance and responsiveness.

Why is my RDP pop up?

This pop up occurs if you’ve entered your user or password incorrectly. However, due to a bug with this browser-based RDP viewer, you will be unable to connect with this machine even if you enter your credentials correctly afterwards. The only known work-around is to try a different lab machine.

Does RDP require VPN?

Can you close RDP while it is active?

Users should avoid simply closing the RDP window or clicking on the Dis connect option, as this will only close the viewing window while leaving your RDP session active. If you were to use RDP with another Windows machine while this session is active, it can lead to unpredictable behavior and errors when running software. To avoid this, we recommend that you only have one active session open at a time.

By connecting to PSU’s Virtual Private Network (VPN), you can protect your personal data that is sent over the internet when you are off campus. The VPN is useful if you need to use certain PSU systems from home that require you to be on the campus network (such as Banweb ), or if you are accessing sensitive University information.

Do not click “Disconnect” or close the window as your session will remain active, which could lead to errors when attempting to connect again later. Unless you are using an MCECS lab or office computer with wired access to our network (or you are using the Internet Browser option described below), you must be on the VPN to use remote desktop. This includes laptop users on campus.

Application Process

  1. Employee discusses their request to work remotely with their supervisor.
  2. Employee completes the PSU Remote Work Agreement (linked above).
  3. Supervisor reviews Agreement and approves, or makes edits.
  4. Once all approvals are received, the Remote Work Agreement is routed to Human Resources for filing in the Employee’s personnel file.
