Thanks for your very helpful response...the web file manager and FTP options cannot be used because I need native filesystem access for software I use called 'Adobe Photoshop Lightroom'.

I have never gotten iSCSI to work over the internet - I did use SSH to tunnel it. And even if it would work, I would advise against it: It makes your computer access the NAS as a block device, meaning that if you get disconnected during file operations, you get the same result as if you would yank the powercord from your computer: depending of the filesystem, that could mean serious filesystem corruption! Personally, I use WinSCP via SSH.

Yes I think SSH (there are open source clients for Mac) probably looks like the solution however there are problems with this: I am no coder and am not familiar with telneting into NAS boxes but I am very protective of my data so I would need to: 1) change the default SSH port to lessen repeated brute-force password attacks 2) disable SSH access with passwords and implement key exchange only 3) prevent root access with SSH Not sure I have the expertise to do the above.

Maybe I should have clarified - these forums and the How-Tos are helpful and I am sure I could accomplish SSh access in a secure way however I don't have the expertise or the time to try configuring a set-up when (a) I should be concentrating on my job (taking photos) and (b) which, if I get wrong, could lock me out of my NAS!

too bad... the solution would be just what you need... If you google for FUSE you would find tools that allow you to access the NAS via SSH just like a local disk.
