What is RCPD in MSU?

Linux

The linux machines Arctic and Adriatic is intended for instructional use.The linux machines Pacific and Black is intended more for research work. It can also be used for instructional use.

Being nice

When using facilities remotely be aware that you are using a time-sharing system. Please be courteous and use the nice command (see man nice for information) to reduce the computing usage of any CPU or I/O intensive processes. Workstations should, generally, not be used for remote logins, particularly if someone is logged in on the console.

How long does a remote desktop session stay active?

If you disconnect via the start menu or by exiting/closing your Remote Desktop client, your session will remain active on the RDS servers for 24 hours. During this time, you can reconnect to your session, allowing you to continue right where you left off. Disconnected sessions are automatically logged off and removed from the RDS servers after 24 hours of inactivity.

Where are RDS files stored?

While working on the RDS servers, it is important to save all files to your home directory (M: drive). This ensures that your files will be available in future RDS sessions and in the DECS Public Computer Labs. Files stored on the servers local C: drive may be deleted at any time. File locations which are automatically stored in your home directory include the Desktop and My Documents directory.

Can USB devices be redirected?

Some USB devices may not be properly redirected; it depends on the device and whether or not it requires special drivers. Mac and Linux computers are known to have issues redirecting resources. Please contact the DECS Support Office if you are having issues redirecting a USB device.

Do you need to sign out of RDS?

The RDS servers benefit from a rolling maintenance system, wherein the latest updates are applied behind-the-scenes, and you need only sign out and back in to the RDS system to connect to the most up-to-date server.

Can RDS servers be taken off line?

All RDS servers are subject to being restarted or taken off-line for critical maintenance at any time.

What does MSU IT do?

MSU IT works with customers to design and implement network firewalls. This includes working with customers to determine their needs and design firewall zones to complement those needs.

What is MSU Information Technology?

MSU Information Technology protects data transferred over the MSU network by assessing, installing, and configuring security devices, such as firewalls and intrusion detection and prevention (IDP) systems, and investigating security incidents.

What to do if you can't connect to campus VPN?

If you are unable to connect to Campus VPN, you can file an eARM to request access.

Does MSU have a VPN?

MSU IT can consult with MSU departments on whether a local discrete point-to-point VPN may also be needed as part of a unit’s local network needs. A VPN can span physical locations on campus so employees in several different buildings can still be part of one network.

Do you need a VPN for MSU?

In general, if you work for MSU IT and access things in the Data Center, you will likely need the Campus VPN to work remotely
