How do I access my Stanford computer from home?

In conjunction with the VPN client, you can access your Stanford computer’s desktop from home. For PCs, Windows provides a Remote Desktop Connection client which allows you to accomplish this. We do NOT recommend using any type of VNC connections as they are not encrypted.

What is Stanford's virtual private network?

Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a remote access technology that creates a private encrypted connection over the Internet between a single host and Stanford's private network, SUNet. Stanford's VPN allows you to connect to Stanford's network as if you were on campus, making access to restricted services possible.

What can I do with the Stanford VPN?

Stanford's VPN allows you to connect to Stanford's network as if you were on campus, making access to restricted services possible. There are two types of VPN available: Default Stanford (split-tunnel) allows access to anything at stanford.edu via the VPN connection but non-Stanford traffic flows normally on an unencrypted internet connection.

What is a Stanford IP address and how do I get one?

When using VPN, your off-campus computer is dynamically assigned a Stanford IP address to connect back to Stanford's network. A Stanford IP address allows you access to Stanford's computing resources and certain campus services (e.g., departmental file and print servers).

Cloud Gateway, a version of site-to-site VPN, is a fully-managed service that offers a quicker set-up and connection to campus networks. Cloud Gateway is currently available for clients of Cloud Account Management Services.

Windows

The Windows 10 operating system comes with a remote desktop client already installed so you don't need to install additional software. To launch the application, type "remote desktop" in the search box on the taskbar and then select Remote Desktop Connection. This selection will open the remote desktop connection dialog box.

Ubuntu Linux

The Ubuntu operating system also comes with its own native remote desktop client. To launch the application, type "remote desktop" in the search box on the dock and then select Remmina Remote Desktop Client. If you can't find the application, follow ☞ these instructions to do the installation.
