RTUs often have application-specific logic programmed into firmware and/or software. Such control logic is useful for executing functionality that is data-intensive, time-sensitive, or is required for fail-safe operation of equipment. Such functions would not generally be practical to carry out remotely from a host system. Examples of RTU-based control logic include proportional integral derivitive controller (PID) loops which measure and maintain a given flow rate by adjusting a valve’s position, gas measurement, pump-off control, data logging, and a variety of others.

How does a RTU work?

An RTU examines all its status inputs every millisecond and determines whether any have changed from their value at the prior millisecond for the tagging. When changes are found, a record is made, showing the time (to the millisecond) and the inputs that have changed. Although RTUs for years had sufficient computing power to provide a 1-millisecond time scan of all status inputs, a problem remained in that the local time of every RTU could not be easily synchronized to the exact same millisecond. The only solution was to use a highly accurate time source that could be made available to all RTUs. GPS technology has enabled global placement of RTUs that are time synchronized to 1-millisecond (or better) accuracy. Furthermore, the host can use this technology to enable clocks in a SCADA system keep the exact time. This brings up another idiosyncrasy of SCADA systems. Because they cover large geographic areas, it is quite probable that the local time where one RTU is situated may be in a different time zone than another RTU and even the host. Rather than keeping local time, most SCADA systems elect either to keep time based on where the operators (and host) are located or to use Greenwich mean time (GMT) for the system time. This second choice may be taken to deal with another time-related problem: the daylight savings time adjustments made each autumn and spring.

How does multiple RTUs affect reliability?

Multiple RTUs connected to an MTU increases the reliability of a system by reducing the chances of network failure as many RTUs connect to a central control. Here all RTUs are connected to each other via central MTU indirectly, and each RTU has a point to point to connectivity with MTU on individual bases [35]. An extended or series star topology is a varient of the same group, in which each branch has series connection extendedly. The advantage of this connection is use of one MTU with many devices, while with the increased complexity and compromised efficiency of the system [32] ( Fig. 19 ).

Earlier versions did not support any built-in intelligence or capabilities, such as for local execution of the automation functions.

The instructions for the automation of field data interface devices are usually stored locally since the limited bandwidth typical of communication links to the SCADA central host makes central storage impractical. Such instructions are traditionally held within local electronic devices known as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which have in the past been physically separate from RTUs. PLCs connect directly to field instruments and incorporate programmed intelligence in the form of logical procedures that will be executed in the event of certain field conditions. More recent systems have no PLCs and local control logic is held within the RTUs, or in relay logic in the local switchboard.
