What is the UW-Madison Remote Desktop Service?

How to identify yourself as a valid UW Madison user?

If you have a database URL in your browser that doesn’t contain ezproxy.library.wisc.edu, you can identify yourself as a valid UW-Madison user by clicking on the remote access bookmarklet in your list of bookmarks. This will redirect you to a page where you can login with your NetID and gain access to licensed content.

How to access licensed resources?

The best way to access licensed electronic resources is through the links to those resources on the library website and in the catalog. If you want to use your own bookmarked URLs, it is important to use this bookmarklet, which will allow for authorized access to licensed resources for you.

How to bookmark a library resource?

If you would like to bookmark a library resource, simply copy the URL from a library web page to ensure you get the correct information. If you find that a library resource denies you access, you can try using the library’s Remote access bookmarklet (see menu on the right). PLEASE NOTE: The remote access bookmarklet will only work for UW-Madison faculty, staff, and students.

Cookies information is used to set up connection information about your search session. The alternative to cookies stored on your computer would be storing this information on the database computers, where you would have no control over what it might be used for or how long it is kept.

Note: As cookies are just a text file there is no known instance of the cookies.txt file being used to transmit a computer virus.

What is WiscVPN software?

WiscVPN (Virtual Private Network) software allows UW–Madison faculty, staff and students to access University resources even when they are using a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP). It accomplishes this by encrypting internet traffic between a home/remote personal or work computer/laptop and the campus network.
