How do I access my Stanford computer from home?

The remote desktop connection will appear as if you are sitting at the computer to which you are remotely connected. In conjunction with the VPN client, you can access your Stanford computer’s desktop from home. For PCs, Windows provides a Remote Desktop Connection client which allows you to accomplish this.

What can I do with the Stanford VPN?

Stanford's VPN allows you to connect to Stanford's network as if you were on campus, making access to restricted services possible. There are two types of VPN available: Default Stanford (split-tunnel) allows access to anything at stanford.edu via the VPN connection but non-Stanford traffic flows normally on an unencrypted internet connection.

Cloud Gateway

Cloud Gateway, a version of site-to-site VPN, is a fully-managed service that offers a quicker set-up and connection to campus networks. Cloud Gateway is currently available for clients of Cloud Account Management Services.

Access and Accounts

Your SCVMC username will be provided by your supervisor. You can reset your password by calling tech support.

Epic

SCVHHS HealthLink Portal contains training a tips directly from SCVMC. Log in using your SCVMC email (<epic_username>@hhs.sccgov.org) with same password used for SCVMC remote portal.

Haiku

Haiku is a mobile version of Epic. Its features are limited but it can be very useful if used correctly.

How does remote desktop work on Stanford?

Remote desktop connections allow people to view and control the desktop of one computer while sitting at a computer in another location. The remote desktop connection will appear as if you are sitting at the computer to which you are remotely connected. In conjunction with the VPN client, you can access your Stanford computer’s desktop from home. For PCs, Windows provides a Remote Desktop Connection client which allows you to accomplish this. We do NOT recommend using any type of VNC connections as they are not encrypted. VNC connections may be subject to compromise.

What is Stanford VPN?

A VPN is a Virtual Private Network which encrypts network traffic from a remote computer to the Stanford VPN server, which then unencrypts it and passes it to the desired destination. General computer users in the School of Medicine can use Stanford University's Public VPN service to securely connect to Stanford resources from off-campus.

How to remotely connect to a computer?
