Stony Brook's VPN requires two-step login. That means when you sign into the VPN you will be prompted from second device to approve and finish the authentication.

How do I get remote access to the library?

Remote access to the library’s collections of web-based resources is available for current Stony Brook faculty, students, and staff. Dial-up, DSL, and cable modem access are supported. The easiest way to connect to library licensed resources from off campus is through searches on the library website and databases.

What is the difference between on-campus access and remote access?

While access from on campus is, in most cases, available to all, remote access is restricted to current Stony Brook faculty, students, and staff, as required by license agreements with the producers of these resources.

How do I Find my Stony Brook netid?

Log into SOLAR using your Stony Brook ID number and SOLAR password. (If you don’t have a SOLAR password, follow the information on the SOLAR entry page to get one.) Once you’re logged into SOLAR, go to the “NetID information” section and select the options to view your NetID and to set your NetID password.

What is RD gateway?

A RD Gateway allows you to establish a RDP connection to a Windows system, but tunneled through a HTTPS connection. It eliminates the need to allow RDP connections directly to a Windows system, which is considered a security risk.

Can I use RD Gateway on Duo?

This would include Windows workstations. This can be done from both on and off campus (without the need for VPN). Anyone with a valid NetID and Duo account can use it.

Do I need a VPN connection?

If you are a student, many services can be accessed from the Virtual SINC Site without VPN access, such as:

Signing into the VPN

Stony Brook's VPN requires two-step login. That means when you sign into the VPN you will be prompted from second device to approve and finish the authentication. The VPN uses Duo Security for two-step login. New users will receive an email on how to enroll at least two devices.

Important Considerations

Be sure to have your default Duo enrolled device available when logging into the VPN.
