Working with CSIL using CLI is quite easy: 1) Run PuTTY and type the address of the remote host in "Host Name" textbox (in our case, the host name is csil.cs.ucsb.edu). Use the default port 22. Afterwards, click "Open". 2) When asked, type in your login and password, which correspond to your College of Engineering account.

How many workstations are there in a CTL?

The CTL is a computer-enhanced classroom with 35 workstations (one per student) that allows students to perform "hands-on" programming during lecture or discussion. The computers are configured identically to the Computer Science Instructional Lab to maintain a consistent environment for the students.

What is CSIL?

The term CSIL (pronounced “see sill”) is used by members of the Computer Science community at UCSB to refer to two different things:

Remote Access via ssh

The machines of the CSIL network can be accessed remotely using an SSH connection. The following articles have more information about connecting via ssh from various operating systems:

Use csil-01 through csil-48, not csil.cs.ucsb.edu

Students and faculty are encouraged to use csil-01.cs.ucsb.edu through csil-48.cs.ucsb.edu. These are the preferred remote access machines.

Support Information

All of the CSIL network machines ( csil-nn.cs, csil.cs and cstl-nn.cs) are supported by the ECI system staff https://eci.ucsb.edu/eci/.

Reporting system issues

Students/TAs/Instructors are encouraged, if/when they find significant differences between/among systems, or other unexpected behavior, to report these problems.
