Mobile and remote technology, or DirectAccess, allows off-campus network access for Windows devices without connecting using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
Mac Devices
Connect to the UMICH VPN to access your home directory and department drives from off-campus. The UMICH VPN is installed on Macs. If you are using the VPN for the first time, you may need to add it to your menu bar.
Why do universities use remote access?
As you may know, the use of remote access tools to dial in to on-campus computers poses a potential security risk to your and the University's sensitive information. Criminals and hackers often use these access tools to steal information or to mask the activity of computers infected by malware.

What is a VPN in U of M?
A virtual private network is used to allow offsite users to access secured/restricted resources. The VPN utilizes public resources such as the Internet to provide remote users with secure access to the U of M's network. It allows the authentication and encryption of data between the remote user's computer and the campus network.
How to protect your personal devices?
Secure personal devices. For your personal devices, take the time to update your operating systems and apps before accessing university systems or data. Do not disable any security protections such as anti-virus or firewalls. Ensure your personal systems is up to date with the latest operating systems and patches.
What is multi factor authentication?
Multi-factor authentication adds a second layer of security to your online accounts. Verifying your identity using a second factor (like your phone or other mobile device) prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if they know your password.
