How do I connect to UofT's VPN?

Enter or select “general.vpn.utoronto.ca” and click “Connect”. An authentication window will open for the group “UofT Default” for the default profile.

How do I connect to utorcsi?

UTORcsi is a remote access VPN service. It connects your computer to the University’s network and protects the traffic across suspect intermediate networks such as hotels and coffee shops. When connected, all internet traffic from your computer will pass through UTORcsi. If you don’t see the icon, go to Settings and click on Network & Internet.

Can I use my U of T laptop to work remotely?

If you have a U of T laptop, we recommend that you bring it home when working remotely. This way, the applications you need for work will already be available to you. If you need to access your I: or H: drives from your U of T laptop, use the UTORcsi VPN and review instructions on how to use and/or install UTORcsi.

Why do universities use VPN?

For many reasons members of the University community will need to secure their access to sensitive systems as well and protect themselves when connecting from remote locations while traveling. Virtual Private Networks (VPN) allow a user to route their computer’s internet traffic through a specific network when not immediately connected to it.

Does U of T have a contract with Alibaba?

In order to provide access to University of Toronto (U of T) online resources for students and others residing in mainland China, U of T has signed a contract with Alibaba for a network service. Chinese companies are required to operate in accordance with China’s cyber security laws and there is an inherent risk of monitoring for individuals in mainland China using any network solution.

Installation

MIE VPN is based on the open-source (free) OpenVPN software, with customized settings to connect to the mie.utoronto.ca network.

Connecting to MIE VPN

After installing the MIE VPN software, simply run the program. You should be prompted for Username and Password. Type your MIE user login and password (same login as for your @mie.utoronto.ca email account).

Connecting to your MIE desktops and printers

After a successful connection to MIE VPN, you should be able to connect to desktops, printers and other networked machines on the MIE network. For example, by connecting using Remote Desktop, Virtual Network Computing (VNC), File Sharing, etc.

Cisco AnyConnect VPN

Cisco AnyConnect VPN is a general, remote access, VPN service. It connects your computer to the University’s network and protects the traffic across suspect intermediate networks such as hotels and coffee shops. OneDrive is a key application for you to use when you work from home: it allows you to access your computer files from any device, anywhere in the world.
