What is the main purpose of a RAS server?

A remote access server (RAS) is a type of server that provides a suite of services to remotely connected users over a network or the Internet. It operates as a remote gateway or central server that connects remote users with an organization's internal local area network (LAN).

What are the types of remote access?

The primary remote access protocols in use today are the Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), Remote Access Services (RAS), and Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).

How does a remote access work?

Remote access simply works by linking the remote user to the host computer over the internet. It does not require any additional hardware to do so. Instead, it requires remote access software to be downloaded and installed on both the local and remote computers.

Which technology is used in remote access?

virtual private network (VPN) technologyRemote access software is usually accomplished using a virtual private network (VPN) technology. This type of method is more available compared to others since it is a more secure remote access software that connects the user and the enterprise's networks through an internet connection.

Stay up to date on campus network status

Check OTS Alerts to see if there is a campus-wide or building-specific network issue. If you're experiencing a Wi-Fi or Internet problem and don't see it on OTS Alerts, let us know by using this Wi-Fi reporting form.

Evaluate your home Internet

Test, compare, and evaluate your home Internet to make sure you have an optimal connection for remotely attending TU classes or meetings. Plus, access resources for choosing a home Internet Service Provider. Get started.

TU Wireless Network

TU Wireless network offers two on-campus connections: tu-secure and tu-openaccess. See instructions for setting up either network on your device.

Wireless Network Coverage

TU wireless networking extends across the campus’ 329 acres. See areas of campus that are covered in the Wireless Coverage Map of TU Campus (PDF) or check the list below for specific locations.

Wi-Fi Calling

This service is provided by cellular carriers. It uses any available Wi-Fi network to place and receive calls when cellular service is insufficient or unavailable.

Virtual Workspace

The Virtual Workspace service provides University employees access to certain software applications, virtual desktops and network file shares from any off-campus computer or device. Students have the ability to remotely use applications like SPSS, Mathematica and Minitab. This web-based service is the preferred method for TU's remote access.

Remote Desktop Gateway

The Remote Desktop Gateway service enables TU faculty and staff to remotely connect to their Windows-based campus computer from off campus. See the self-help docs .

Case Guest

If you are using Case Guest, you will need VPN (Virtual Private Networking).

Remote Access

The information about remote access presented here is for all users not directly wired to the CWRU network, and especially for those individuals attempting to use the health sciences library resources.

Electronic Resources

Access to the electronic resources at Case Western Reserve University is governed by site licenses and restricted to current CWRU faculty, staff and students.

How wireless access points work

There are a variety of ways to establish or improve a WiFi signal in your home, and there are many different devices that approach wireless networking differently. Before you pick out a wireless access point, make sure you understand the competing technologies and what your connectivity options are.

Location, location, location

Wireless access points are only as effective as where they’re placed – and in general, the higher the better. Most wireless access points are designed to be set up in one of three locations:
